Activist Boniface Mwangi Arrested by DCI Officers at His Home in Machakos
Nairobi, Kenya – July 19, 2025 – Prominent Kenyan human rights activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi was arrested at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday morning.
The arrest has sparked widespread concern among human rights advocates and the public, with many demanding clarity on the reasons behind his detention.
Mwangi’s wife, Njeri Mwangi, confirmed the arrest, stating that DCI officers stormed their Courage Base residence in Machakos, approximately 40 kilometers east of Nairobi, and took him into custody in the early hours.
She reported that police confiscated his electronic devices and accused him of “terrorism and arson.”
According to reports, the activist was apprehended over allegations related to recent protests in Kenya.
However, no official charges have been disclosed by the DCI, and the specific reasons for his arrest remain unclear.
The arrest comes shortly after Mwangi, together with Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire, filed a lawsuit against the Tanzanian government at the East African Court of Justice, seeking compensation for alleged abduction, torture, and mistreatment.
The incident has raised questions about press freedom and civil liberties in Kenya, as activists and journalists continue to face scrutiny for their work documenting social and political issues.
