La Liga club continues African talent acquisition with signing of 18-year-old midfielder from Nairobi

Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo has completed the signing of Kenyan U20 midfielder Aldrine Kibet on a four-year contract worth €6 million (approximately Sh 900 million), marking another significant investment in African football talent by the Galician club.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder will initially join Celta Fortuna, the club’s reserve team, as part of a structured development pathway designed to accelerate his integration into the senior squad at Estadio Municipal de Balaídos.

Kibet’s journey to professional football reads like a fairy tale.

Just two years ago, he was captaining St. Anthony’s Secondary School to victory in the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) finals, where his extraordinary performance earned him both the Most Valuable Player award and the Golden Boot.

His tournament statistics were nothing short of remarkable: 25 goals and 27 assists in a single campaign, numbers that would make even seasoned professionals envious.

This breakout performance caught the attention of former Harambee Stars midfielder David Kenga, who became instrumental in connecting the youngster with Spain’s Nàstic Sports Academy.

The academy, affiliated with third-tier Spanish club Gimnàstic de Tarragona, served as Kibet’s European launching pad.

It was there that Celta Vigo’s renowned scouting network, always vigilant for emerging talent, identified the Kenyan as a prospect worth pursuing.

Celta Vigo’s acquisition of Kibet reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to youth development and international talent identification.

The Galician side, founded in 1923, has built a reputation for nurturing young players despite never claiming La Liga or Copa del Rey glory, though they have reached three cup finals.

The club’s decision to initially place Kibet in their reserve team demonstrates a measured approach to player development, allowing the teenager to adapt to European football’s demands while maintaining proximity to the first team setup.

The significance of this move extends beyond football.

Kibet’s parents made the journey from Nairobi to Spain to witness their son sign professional terms, underlining the magnitude of this opportunity for the family and Kenyan football more broadly.

Having turned 18 only in May, Kibet represents the new generation of Kenyan footballers making their mark in European leagues.

His transition from secondary school football to professional contracts in one of Europe’s top leagues demonstrates the potential pathways available to talented African players.

The midfielder’s rapid ascent from school captain to professional footballer in Spain’s top flight serves as inspiration for young Kenyan players and highlights the importance of proper scouting networks and development pathways in African football.

As Kibet begins his European adventure with Celta Vigo, his journey will be closely watched by football fans across Kenya and beyond, hoping to witness the emergence of another African star in European football.
