Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero’s driver has been fined Sh100,000 by the Milimani Traffic Court after a dramatic road incident involving journalist Larry Madowo went viral online.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed the driver brazenly blocking traffic on a busy Nairobi road while engaging in a heated exchange with Madowo. The confrontation sparked outrage among Kenyans, many of whom decried the growing impunity among VIP drivers on public roads.
When arraigned in court, the driver pleaded guilty to obstructing other motorists and admitted to having acted recklessly. He told the court that he was rushing to the airport when the confrontation occurred and expressed remorse for his actions.
“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone at the airport and I will not repeat the offence,” the driver said in his plea for leniency.
However, the presiding magistrate, while acknowledging his apology, said the offence carried a clear penalty under traffic law. “I have considered your mitigation, but the law provides a fine of Sh100,000. I therefore impose the maximum penalty,” she ruled.
The driver was ordered to pay the fine immediately before being released.
The viral incident has reignited public debate on VIP entitlement and abuse of privilege on Kenyan roads, with calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws even for those linked to senior government officials.
