Atheists Want Catholic Cardinal John Njue and Priests Arrested
The Atheists in Kenya (AIK) society now wants Catholic Church leaders who led the Palm Sunday mass on Sunday arrested for violating the government’s directive on social distancing.
The society wants Catholic Church leader in Kenya Cardinal John Njue in prison claiming he disregarded the Public Health laws and procedures set by the government to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Led by society Chairperson Harrison Mumia, the atheists say the priests flouted the directives by standing less than one meter away from each other while administering Holy Communion.
“We are calling for the arrest of the Catholic Church leadership that conducted the mass at Holy Family Basillica today (Sunday), including His Eminence, Cardinal Bishop John Njue,” a statement by the society states. “We expect the Catholic Church to lead the way in the fight against coronavirus. The leadership of the Catholic Church should take a leading role in practicing social distancing so that Kenyans, many of whom are Christians can heed the calls to stay far enough away from each other.”
The society argues that the government has been arresting people all over the country for violating the said laws and the church should not get any special treatment. They were referring to 15 athletes who were found training in a group in violation of social distancing rules in Elgeyo Marakwet and arrested
