Liz Cheney, an attorney and politician, has a net worth of $20 million. She represented Wyoming in the US House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023.
Cheney, the eldest daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, worked in different roles at the US State Department under George W. Bush.
During this period, she became known for her strong neoconservative views.
In 2021, Cheney gained prominence as the vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Attack on the US Capitol.
Early Life and Education
Elizabeth Lynne Cheney was born on July 28, 1966, in Madison, Wisconsin, as the oldest of Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney’s two daughters.
Her sister, Mary, is her younger sibling. During the 1970s, when her father was elected to the US Congress, the family split their time between Casper, Wyoming, and Washington, DC.
Cheney attended McLean High School and graduated in 1984.
She later enrolled at Colorado College and then the University of Chicago Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1996.
Career Highlights
Before attending law school, Cheney spent five years working for the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.
Following this, she joined the consulting firm Armitage Associates. After graduating from law school, Cheney practiced law at the firm White & Case.
She also worked as an international law attorney and consultant at the International Finance Corporation.
Additionally, Cheney served as a USAID officer in US embassies located in Budapest, Hungary, and Warsaw, Poland.
US State Department (2002-2007)
In 2002, Cheney became Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, where she led the Middle East Partnership Initiative.
In 2003, she left to work on the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign.
Cheney returned to the State Department in early 2005 as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives.
She oversaw initiatives like the Fund of the Future and Foundation of the Future, aimed at promoting democracy and press freedom.
Cheney also led the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group. Known for her neoconservative policies, Cheney emphasized national security and supported a strong military stance during her tenure at the State Department.
After State Department
After departing the State Department, Cheney co-chaired Fred Thompson’s 2008 presidential campaign.
When Thompson withdrew from the race, she joined Mitt Romney’s campaign as a senior foreign policy advisor.
In 2009, Cheney, along with William Kristol and Deborah Burlingame, founded the non-profit organization Keep America Safe.
The organization aimed to promote the hawkish policies of the Bush-Cheney administration. Cheney later became a contributor to Fox News.
Race for US Senate
In the summer of 2013, Cheney launched her campaign for the US Senate as a Republican from Wyoming.
However, her campaign faced challenges due to her strong stance on foreign policy and a public disagreement with her sister over same-sex marriage, as her sister is gay.
Also, Cheney struggled to gain the same level of popularity as the incumbent, Mike Enzi. As a result, she withdrew from the race in early 2014.

Cheney married attorney Philip Perry in 1993. They have five children: Philip Jr., Kate, Elizabeth, Grace, and Richard.
Philip Perry is an American attorney who served in George W. Bush’s administration.
He held roles including acting associate attorney general at the Department of Justice, general counsel of the White House Office of Management and Budget, and general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security.
