Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti Named Chair of UoN Council in Nationwide Shake-Up

The appointments and reappointments are effective for a three-year period from July 25, 2025.

Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as the new Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has appointed Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as the new Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council, in a sweeping shake-up of university councils nationwide.

In a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025, Nyaigotti-Chacha was named chair under section 36(1)(a) of the Universities Act.

He will serve a three-year term alongside newly appointed council members Dr John Kakonge, Samuel Njuguna Kimani, Dr Jonathan Ltipalei Lodompui and Mary Amuyunzu.

The appointment comes a few days after former UoN Council Chairperson Amukowa Anangwe and other senior officials were exonerated in a corruption case.

This was after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) withdrew a Sh32.4 million graft case under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

Still in the gazette notice, Ogamba made appointments to other universities across the country.

At Kenyatta University, the CS appointed Joash Mokamba Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali as council members.

He also reappointed Maj. Gen. (Retd) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita to continue serving on the council.

For Egerton University, the CS appointed Prof James Sang as Chairperson. Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello, as council members, will join him.

Kisii University also saw new appointments and reappointments. Josephat Kipsoy Sawe was reappointed, while Dr Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Rev Prof Peter Mageto and Dr Mwenda Makathimo were appointed as new members of the council.

At the University of Eldoret, Dr Peter Onchari Kereri was reappointed to the council, while Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia joined as new members.

At the University of Embu, Prof PM Kutima was appointed as Chairperson, with Christine Guchu appointed as a council member.

Kirinyaga University received four new council members: Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga.

At Murang’a University of Technology, the new members appointed were Allan Mugambi Michael, Amran Mohamed Ali, Getrude Chemutai Kurgat and Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo.

Garissa University also had changes with the appointment of John Karani Ndiwa, Jonah N. Kariuki (CPA), and Dr Alice Otwala as members of the council. Hassan Sheikh Mohamed was reappointed for another term.

For Mama Ngina University College, five new members were appointed to the council: Lizzie Chongoti, Dr Joyce Kemunto Nyabuti, Gilbert Wafula Nyongesa, Thomas Meigkwelly Leremore and Davies Mukuria.

Nyandarua University College received appointments of Kirkwony Sophy, Fatuma Abdi, Wafula Chelongo, Julius Obare Mokogi (CPA) and Kariuki Peter Maru as council members.

At Bomet University College, Prof John Shiundu was appointed Chairperson, with Dr Emily Kwamboka Nyagaram, Rose Chepkorir, and Fredrick Njoroge joining as members. Reuben Butaki was reappointed to the council.

Prof Josephat Kipkoech Yego was named Chairperson of the Koitaleel Samoei University College Council. He will serve alongside Elizabeth Mjomba and Prof Raphael Kapiyo.

Moi University appointed Mercy Ringa Njagi as a new council member, while Laikipia University added Eliazer Kipyego Kogey.

Willy Kioko Malile was appointed as a council member for Rongo University.

Dr Idle Omar Farah was reappointed as Chairperson of the Technical University of Kenya Council. Eng John Nyambok was appointed as a new member.

Karatina University received three appointments: David Joseph Osero and Edward Kobuthi as new members and David Opiyo as a reappointee.

David Kipngetich Koech was appointed as a council member at South Eastern Kenya University.

Taita Taveta University retained Prof. Isaac Meroka Mbeche as Chairperson and welcomed new members Emma Kibiru and Stephen Kilungya.

At the Co-operative University of Kenya, Anthony Saiti and Mary Simat were appointed as council members.

The appointments and reappointments are effective for a three-year period from July 25, 2025.
