NAIROBI, Kenya – A police officer has been arrested following the shooting of an unarmed civilian hawker during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday, the National Police Service has confirmed.
The victim, identified as Eli Joshua, was shot by the officer using an anti-riot shotgun during demonstrations that took place in the capital’s commercial hub on June 17, 2025.
Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment of the officer involved, though the officer’s identity has not been disclosed by authorities.
“The National Police Service has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun, within the Nairobi Central Business District on 17th June 2025,” the NPS said in an official statement.
“Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested.”
According to police reports, Joshua was rushed to hospital following the shooting and is currently receiving medical treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.
In a statement, the police also highlighted security concerns during Tuesday’s protests, noting the presence of armed groups carrying crude weapons within the CBD.
“NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons, in today’s protests within CBD. The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings,” the statement read.
Investigations are underway to identify and take action against those involved in the armed disturbances, according to police.
Inspector-General Kanja emphasized that while the National Police Service does not condone police misconduct, it will also firmly deal with unlawful behavior during protests.
