DCI Bust Secret Narcotics Lab in Posh Diani Villa Linked to Italian Mafia
Diani, Kwale County — In a dramatic raid that reads like a scene from a crime thriller, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have dismantled a clandestine drug manufacturing lab operating from a high-end villa in the coastal paradise of Diani.
Tucked away behind tall perimeter walls and guarded gates in the tranquil Mwabungo village of Ukunda, the seemingly luxurious compound turned out to be a front for a major narcotics operation run by an Italian national and his Kenyan accomplice.
The DCI’s Anti-Narcotics Unit, acting on weeks of surveillance and tip-offs from local informants, swooped in on the one-acre estate, where they found fully operational drug-processing equipment, chemical substances used in synthetic drug production, and packaging materials clearly labeled with the names of popular street narcotics.
Two suspects — Gianardi Giulio, a 37-year-old believed to have links to organized drug syndicates in Europe, and Moses Nanoka Egadwa, a Kenyan national suspected to be his local liaison — were arrested at the scene.
Detectives also discovered a concealed section of the compound where what appeared to be cannabis was being cultivated under controlled conditions.
“This was a well-coordinated international operation disguised under the comfort of a private coastal residence,” a senior DCI officer told this reporter. “We believe the villa was a major processing and packaging hub for narcotics destined for both the local market and overseas routes.”
The operation highlights a growing concern among security agencies: the infiltration of Kenyan coastal towns by foreign criminal networks using tourism-friendly zones as smokescreens for illicit dealings.
Diani, often celebrated for its white sand beaches and laid-back charm, now finds itself in the crosshairs of international drug enforcement.
The suspects are in custody and are expected to be formally charged in court in the coming days as investigations continue into the scope of the operation and potential links to European drug cartels.
The National Police Service has assured the public of its continued crackdown on drug trafficking, vowing to root out criminal networks exploiting Kenya’s borders and communities.
“Let this be a warning to all who think they can operate in the shadows — we are watching, and we will act,” the DCI said in a statement.
