IEBC Confirms Receiving Four MP Recall Requests
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed receiving four formal requests to recall Members of Parliament from office, amid a broader push for electoral reforms across the country.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, speaking in Mombasa, said the commission is currently reviewing the petitions, noting that the decision to proceed with any recall process will be guided by the gravity and credibility of the issues raised in each case.
“The commission will assess each request based on its merits,” Ethekon stated. He did not disclose the identities of the MPs targeted or the grounds cited in the petitions.
In addition to handling the recall requests, the IEBC is grappling with delays in the constitutionally mandated boundary review.
Ethekon revealed that the commission has moved to the Supreme Court to seek legal guidance on the matter, attributing the delay to the prolonged absence of commissioners, which hampered the review process.
Despite these challenges, Ethekon affirmed that the commission is actively laying the groundwork for several critical reforms.
These include a nationwide voter registration drive, electoral legal amendments, and preparations for by-elections in areas where parliamentary seats have fallen vacant.
“The IEBC remains committed to strengthening democratic processes and upholding the integrity of elections in Kenya,” he emphasized.
The developments come as the electoral body works to rebuild public confidence following past controversies, and as the country begins to gear up for the 2027 general election.
