Good News For Miraa Farmers As Govt Announces Higher Prices
The new prices represent an increase from the previous amounts of Ksh 700, Ksh 350, and Ksh 500 for the three grades, respectively.
Miraa farmers in Kenya are celebrating a significant increase in prices announced by the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday. The new prices are double what farmers have been earning previously.
Acting on recommendations from a committee established to review the pricing of the crop, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe confirmed that the government has revised the prices for different grades of miraa, resulting in increased earnings for farmers.
“The newly negotiated prices for miraa are Ksh 1,300 for Grade 1, Ksh 700 for Grade 2, and Ksh 1,000 for Alele,” said CS Kagwe on Saturday, announcing that the price changes take effect immediately.
The new prices represent an increase from the previous amounts of Ksh 700, Ksh 350, and Ksh 500 for the three grades, respectively.
In determining the new prices, Kagwe indicated that factors such as production data, costs, and supply and demand were taken into consideration. He stated that the ministry will continue to review the situation in the miraa sub-sector and implement changes that benefit farmers where necessary.
“The government will continue to address market access challenges to expand export opportunities in our current and new markets,” he added.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, through the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), is mandated to regulate, develop, and promote scheduled crops in accordance with existing regulations.
