Previous Covid19 models had predicted doom of upto 10,000 by the end of April but luckily, we’re in mid May and with the numbers less than 1,000. However, surge a success in minimizing the spread through the lockdown and curfew, the health ministry is now predicting the numbers to rapidly start rising given a model they’ve studied.

“The numbers we are seeing are exactly what a recent modelling projected, that we will now start to see numbers going up to the 50’s per day.” Principal Secretary, Health Susan Mochache said.

With many Kenyans slowly getting back to normalcy, the ministry is shooting further warning that this could be counterproductive as the virus is yet to be fairly contained. “The fact that we are beginning to go back to normal business is a concern and it may pull us back; it’s important that we recognize as Kenyans that the little we have done has made a very big difference.” She said.

Recent reports have indicated that Kenya lags in the testing capacity with a maximum of 1,500 tests done in a day which is way below given the general population. KEMRI, the nationals research body mandated for testing Covid19, has been broke without enough resources to develop their own kits and conduct a mass testing. Kemri is said to have a 10,000 daily tests capacity.

The PS has refuted claims that KEMRI is incapacitated, “As far as coronavirus is concerned KEMRI is properly facilitated to ensure that it undertakes its mandate both in terms of supporting the testing and in research.” She told reporters.
