EACC After Mike Sonko’s City Hall Cartels

Published

EACC has flagged Nairobi City Hall cartels that have been incubated by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko since he was elected in the office.

The embattled Governor has battalions of dubious businessmen who are minting millions from dealings that are the subject of investigations with EACC investigations.

The same governor who has been chest thumping—since his campaign days—of being anti-cartel is running a county full of cartels. According to DCI and EACC, Sonko’s shady tenderprenuers have been depositing millions of cash, believed to be kickbacks, into Sonko’s accounts.

Almost, if not all, individuals listed to be charged alongside the governor over the Sh537 million corruption scandal are his long-time associates who double up as his partner, friends and all doing business with Nairobi County  Government.

Among those on the list of cartels that EACC is after is the director ROG Security Limited, Arab Auto Limited, High Energy Limited and High Energy Petroleum Limited, Anthony Otieno Ombok.

Ombok is on the anti-graft watchdog over his close links with the governor that has seen Nairobi lose millions of shillings. He’s the chairman of Eastlands-based ROG SACCO and was temporarily appointed by the governor as his communications adviser in 2017 shortly after his election. The governor has a huge interest in the Cartel-filled matatu industry too.

Also on the list is Anthony Mwaura Ng’ang’a, the controversial millionaire in 2017 when EACC detectives filed a case in court over the unexplained wealth of Mr Stanley Mombo Amuti, a former financial controller at the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation.

Ng’ang’a, in an elaborate scheme that is similar to the one in 2017, EACC says the director of Hardi Enterprises Limited and Toddy Civil Engineering Limited wired cash to the personal accounts of Mr Sonko after winning tenders in Nairobi County.

East Africa Legislative Assembly (Eala) MP Simon Mbugua and controversial businessman Paul Kobia are also listed as cartels running under Sonko. The Two were also present at Wilson Airport in solidarity with Mike Sonko following his arrest.

Kobia has in the past been named and investigated over various gold frauds while Mbugua , on the other hand, is a common figure at City hall and calls the shots despite not being an employee of the county government.

He’s also expected to appear before the Voi Law Courts, Taita Taveta County later today morning to answer to charges of assault. According to police sources, the governor will be flown to Voi in the morning to take plea in a case where he is accused of assaulting Coast regional police commander Rashid Yakub.
