Carry Your Own Cross, Uhuru Tells Sonko and Co.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has said he will not get in the way of the law and leaders found guilty of corruption should carry their own crosses. “When an individual is stealing public resources he doesn’t do so on behalf of his family or community. Therefore, anyone who is implicated should carry their own cross,” the President said.
Speaking on Sunday at the St. Francis of Assis Parish Church in Ruiru, Kiambu County, the president cautioned leaders against politicizing the fight against corruption in the country, he added that no leader would be allowed to use their position to avoid prosecution, adding it was the responsibility of every Kenyan to fight corruption.
Uhuru says all institutions mandated to lead the war on graft will not be interfered with, however, everyone will be presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
The president was attending a church fundraiser where he gave a personal contribution of Sh3 million and pledged Sh4 million for the construction of the church.
The head of state’s message comes against the backdrop to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko dramatic arrest last Friday in Voi over graft allegations.
This comes even as the Council of Governors (CoG) recently said they want to urgently meet the President over the leadership crisis in Nairobi County, following the arrest of Governor Mike Sonko. It is unclear when Uhuru will honour the request.
The Nairobi governor was arrested over irregular procurement and payment of over Ksh.357 million. Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji said investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission had collected sufficient evidence to sustain the charges.
Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) and Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal (Samburu) are also facing graft charges.
