Mariam’s Family Forced To Pay Private Divers To Retrieve Bodies As State Agencies Fail
The family of 35-year-old Mariam Kigenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu who perished after their car slid from a ferry into the ocean in Likoni are now being forced to pay private divers with their own money to retrieve their loved ones’ bodies after the exercise was called off Tuesday evening.
State agencies are yet to retrieve the bodied 2 days after Kigenda and her child plunged into the ocean while aboard their vehicle, which slid off MV Harambee Ferry.
Kigenda’s family who have now lost hope in government agencies have been forced to stretch their pockets and seek help from private divers known to have successfully undertaken a similar exercise. Family spokesperson Luka Mbati while addressing journalists on Tuesday evening, said the family had already paid Ksh100, 000 to a private company (Kenya Rescue Divers) to undertake the exercise.
The spokesperson unsure of how much more will be needed said they have no option but to pay so they can retrieve the bodies of their loved ones’.
Mariam’s vehicle, the government now says has been spotted 173 feet in the ocean, but there are no equipment to retrieve it.
