Wicknell Chivayo’s VIP Airport Access Raises Serious Questions Over Security Protocols at JKIA

Nairobi, June 19, 2026 — A viral video appearing to show Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo receiving extraordinary treatment at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has sparked mounting concerns over security procedures at Kenya’s busiest international gateway.

The footage, which has circulated widely across social media platforms, shows Chivayo, popularly known as Sir Wicknell, on the restricted airside apron of the airport alongside a luxury vehicle. He is also seen interacting with ground handling personnel, with several staff members appearing to receive cash from him on the tarmac.

The images have triggered a wave of criticism from aviation professionals, security experts, and members of the public, many of whom are questioning how a private individual was granted access to an area ordinarily subject to some of the strictest security controls in civil aviation.

“What exactly is happening at JKIA?” asked one commentator on social media while tagging the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). “If airport staff can openly receive cash from passengers on the apron, what message does that send about security and accountability?”

Extraordinary Access Under Scrutiny

The latest controversy has renewed attention on what critics describe as a pattern of exceptional treatment afforded to Chivayo whenever he visits Kenya.

Recent reports indicate that the businessman arrived in Nairobi aboard a Gulfstream G550 private jet, an aircraft estimated to be worth billions of shillings. Video footage and photographs shared online show luxury vehicles meeting him directly on the airside apron before he departed the airport.

Such access is ordinarily restricted and closely regulated. Airside areas are designated security zones governed by strict rules intended to protect aircraft operations, passengers, personnel, and critical infrastructure.

Aviation experts note that movement within these zones is typically limited to authorised personnel, approved vehicles, and individuals with the necessary security clearances.

One veteran aviation professional described the scenes captured in the video as “deeply troubling,” arguing that public confidence in airport security depends not only on formal rules but also on the perception that those rules apply equally to everyone.

The Man at the Centre of the Storm

Chivayo is among the most controversial businessmen in Southern Africa.

The founder of Intratrek Zimbabwe and owner of IMC Construction Kenya has built a reputation for lavish displays of wealth, including gifting luxury vehicles and large sums of money to public figures and supporters.

His business dealings have frequently attracted scrutiny. In Zimbabwe, he has previously faced legal challenges, while reports from South Africa have linked him to ongoing investigations into alleged financial crimes connected to Zimbabwe’s 2023 election period. Chivayo has denied wrongdoing.

In Kenya, he has cultivated high-profile relationships within political circles and has been photographed on multiple occasions with senior government officials, including President William Ruto.

His name has also surfaced in controversies involving immigration and citizenship matters, adding to public scrutiny surrounding his activities in the country.

JKIA Expansion Questions Add Fuel to the Debate

The airport-access controversy comes at a sensitive moment.

Recent media reports linked IMC Construction Kenya to the proposed Sh375 billion JKIA expansion project, one of the most significant infrastructure developments currently under consideration in the country.

The project is expected to include a new passenger terminal and a second runway aimed at increasing capacity and strengthening Nairobi’s position as a regional aviation hub.

However, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has publicly stated that Chivayo’s company neither participated in the tender process nor submitted a bid for the project.

Despite that clarification, questions continue to swirl around the perception of influence and access enjoyed by the businessman.

Critics argue that the optics are damaging. A figure associated with multiple regional controversies appears able to move through highly restricted airport zones with a degree of freedom rarely seen outside diplomatic or state delegations.

Why Aviation Experts Are Concerned

Security specialists stress that aviation security extends far beyond passenger screening and baggage checks.

Modern airport security relies heavily on access control, staff discipline, accountability, and the consistent enforcement of protocols.

When exceptions appear to be made for powerful or well-connected individuals, experts warn that confidence in the integrity of those systems can begin to erode.

Among the concerns being raised are whether established procedures were followed, whether all individuals and vehicles entering restricted zones received the necessary authorisations, and whether interactions between passengers and operational staff complied with airport regulations.

Industry observers also warn that repeated exceptions can create a culture in which rules become negotiable, increasing vulnerability to future abuse.

Neither the Kenya Airports Authority nor the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority had issued a detailed public explanation regarding the specific circumstances shown in the video by the time of publication.

While some airport services are handled by licensed concessionaires and ground-handling firms, responsibility for overall airside security ultimately rests with airport authorities and the state.

The controversy has intensified calls for a transparent review of how access was granted, whether procedures were followed, and whether any staff conduct warrants investigation.

A Test for Kenya’s Aviation Credibility

What began as a viral social media spectacle has evolved into a broader debate about privilege, accountability, and the integrity of security controls at one of Africa’s most important airports.

JKIA is not merely a transport facility. It is critical national infrastructure serving millions of passengers annually and acting as a strategic gateway for trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.

For many observers, the central question is no longer about Wicknell Chivayo alone.

It is whether Kenya’s aviation authorities can reassure the public that airport security procedures are applied consistently, regardless of wealth, status, or political connections.

Until clear answers are provided, the images from the JKIA tarmac are likely to remain a powerful symbol of a system facing uncomfortable questions about where influence ends and accountability begins.
