City Tycoon Chris Obure Returns To Senteu Plaza After Court Victory
Nairobi billionaire businessman Chris Obure on Friday returned to Senteu Plaza in Kilimani under police protection, marking a dramatic comeback to the prime commercial property from which he was evicted last year following a protracted ownership and tenancy dispute.
A contingent of police officers accompanied officials enforcing court orders as Obure and representatives of SBS Dunhill Group (EA) Limited regained access to the Lenana Road property, bringing a new chapter to a legal battle that has attracted significant public and commercial interest.
The development follows a major legal victory for SBS Dunhill Group after the Environment and Land Court dismissed an application seeking to overturn proceedings and decisions made by the Business Premises Rent Tribunal (BPRT) concerning the disputed property.
In a 10-page judgment delivered by Justice Charles G. Mbogo, the court found no merit in a Notice of Motion filed by Ajeetkumar C. Shah and other applicants who had sought to quash tribunal proceedings and stop the tribunal from handling matters related to Senteu Plaza.
“The Court finds no merit in the Notice of Motion dated 5th August 2025,” Justice Mbogo ruled, directing that each party bears its own costs and ordering that the matter be marked as closed.
The ruling effectively upheld SBS Dunhill Group’s position in the dispute and removed a significant legal hurdle that had stood in the way of the company’s efforts to regain control of the property.
Legal analysts say the judgment reinforces the principle that courts should not interfere with the proceedings of specialized tribunals unless there are compelling legal grounds to do so.
The latest victory provides a measure of certainty for SBS Dunhill Group after months of litigation before both the Business Premises Rent Tribunal and the Environment and Land Court.
The dispute over Senteu Plaza has been one of the most closely watched commercial property battles in Nairobi, involving claims over tenancy rights, ownership interests and control of the lucrative Kilimani property.
Court records show that SBS Dunhill Group was named as the second respondent in the proceedings, with the applicants seeking to overturn various tribunal rulings linked to the ongoing dispute.
The ruling comes barely a month after SBS Dunhill Group filed a separate multi-billion-shilling suit at the Commercial and Tax Division of the High Court seeking more than KSh7.6 billion in compensation over what it describes as an illegal eviction from Senteu Plaza in May 2025.
In the suit, the company alleges that the eviction resulted in substantial financial losses, including the alleged disappearance of 330 kilograms of jewellery and family gold bars, as well as cash reportedly stored in a diplomatic safe. The company is also seeking compensation for renovation costs, business losses, damages and legal expenses.
Those claims remain before the courts and are yet to be determined.
With Friday’s return to Senteu Plaza and the Environment and Land Court having formally closed the latest challenge, SBS Dunhill Group emerges as the principal beneficiary of the ruling, strengthening its position in a dispute that continues to generate significant legal, commercial and public interest.
