They Wanted Me Poor Forever, But I Secured My Wealth Against Jealous Eyes
When I look at my life today thriving, wealthy, and untouchable I sometimes shiver at the thought of where I’d be if I hadn’t acted fast. You see, the people you eat with, laugh with, and even call family can sometimes be the very reason you are suffering. I didn’t learn this the easy way. I had to watch my business collapse, my bank account dry up, and my name dragged in gossip before I discovered the ugly truth: my own relatives were working day and night to ensure I remained poor.
I was once a proud businessman in Thika. I had built a strong wholesale shop from scratch, supplying goods across estates and even to smaller dukas. Money was flowing in, and I finally felt like I was making something of myself. But my mistake was simple I trusted too much, and I celebrated openly. Every time I went back home to the village, I showed up with shopping, bought drinks for everyone, and even helped pay school fees for cousins. I thought I was building goodwill, but instead, I was fueling envy.
Slowly, things started to change. First, my shop assistant suddenly quit without notice, leaving me stranded during peak season. Then suppliers started “forgetting” to deliver my stock on time. Clients began complaining about products they had never complained about before.
