Saudi Arabia Confirms Alcohol Ban for 2034 FIFA World Cup
Saudi Arabia has confirmed that alcohol will be completely banned during the 2034 FIFA World Cup, with no sales permitted in hotels or any other locations throughout the tournament.
Speaking to British radio station LBC News, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the UK, Prince Khalid Bin Bandar Bin Sultan Al Saud, stated that the kingdom has no plans to change its alcohol policies for the event.
“Rather like our weather, it’s a dry country. At the moment, we don’t allow alcohol, but plenty of fun can be had without it. It’s not 100 per cent necessary,” he explained.
He hinted that while visitors are welcome to consume alcohol after leaving the country, Saudi Arabia will maintain its cultural traditions during the tournament.
Prince Khalid emphasised that the country is willing to accommodate visitors within the boundaries of its customs but will not alter its cultural values to suit others.
FIFA officially confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host nation for the 2034 World Cup in December 2024, making it the second Middle Eastern country to stage the global tournament after Qatar in 2022.
The competition will take place across 15 stadiums in five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and the futuristic city of Neom.
The 2034 edition will also mark a significant milestone, as it will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding the tournament’s format.
