Controversial Car Dealer Khalif Kairo Arrested Again Amid Fraud Allegations in Nairobi
Nairobi, Kenya – January 12, 2025 – Khalif Kairo, the flamboyant Nairobi-based car dealer known for his social media presence and controversial business dealings, has been arrested again on allegations of fraud. This latest arrest comes on the heels of multiple complaints from clients who claim Kairo failed to deliver vehicles after receiving payment.
Kairo, whose real name is Joseph Kairu Wambui, was taken into custody at Capitol Hill Police Station on Saturday, January 11, after a client reported that a 2014 Volvo V40 sold by Kairo was repossessed due to an outstanding loan, contradicting the assurances given at the time of sale.
In videos doing rounds on social media, Kairo is seen being detained at Capitol Hill Police Station on Saturday amid a brief scuffle with the officers.
In one of the clips, Kairo could be heard complaining to officers not to harass him as they threatened him to cooperate.
“Si vita, you are not going to harass me, you can’t harass me bana! You wait I sort things out,” Kairo can be heard saying in the video.
One of the officers after an escalation said, “…Ebu thubutu! Wacha ujinga bwana! Do you think you are the first person to come here? Unaona niko na clients pale kwa ofisi…sitakuruhusu ulete ujinga hapa. Sisi tunapiga watu. Tutakupiga hapa saa hii tu!”
The police are said to have nabbed him after he allegedly failed to convince the victim that he was planning a trip to New York to secure funds and return to settle the matter.
This incident marks another chapter in a series of legal troubles for the businessman, who has faced similar accusations in recent months.
In the past, Kairo has been accused of taking money from clients under false pretenses, promising to import luxury cars which were never delivered. In December 2024, he was detained at Kasarani Police Station for allegedly defrauding a client of Ksh26 million for a high-end vehicle that was never provided.
The arrest has sparked a mix of reactions online, with some expressing support for Kairo while others call for accountability. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, where he will face charges related to obtaining money by false pretense. Legal experts have pointed out that this pattern of behavior could have significant consequences for Kairo’s business reputation and operations.
Despite these controversies, Kairo has maintained a public image of opulence and success, frequently sharing his lifestyle on social media. His car dealership, Kai and Karo, has been at the center of these allegations, with clients reporting delays, undelivered vehicles, and financial losses.
In response to the allegations, Kairo has previously described his legal troubles as typical challenges faced by entrepreneurs, especially when scaling up business ventures. However, the frequency and nature of these complaints paint a picture of systemic issues within his operations.
For now, Khalif Kairo remains in custody, with legal proceedings set to follow. The outcome of these cases will likely have lasting impacts on his business and personal life, underscoring the thin line between an entrepreneurial spirit and the pitfalls of alleged misconduct.
