City Car Dealer Kairo in Court Yet Again Over Sh3M Car Import Fraud
Kairo is accused of falsely claiming he could import a motor vehicle, a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 line from Japan for Odundo.
Controversial car dealer Khalif Kairo, whose real name is Joseph Wambui, found himself back in the legal spotlight on Wednesday when he was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
This time, Kairo is accused of defrauding yet another client of Sh 3 million.
Just a day prior, Kairo was re-arrested at the same court premises following a court mention for one of his previous fraud cases. The new charges against him include cheating, as defined under section 315 of the Penal Code.
According to the police, between October 5 and 7, 2024, at Westlands Business Park in Nairobi, Kairo allegedly used fraudulent methods to secure Sh 3,045,000 from Dan Odhiambo Odundo. Kairo is accused of falsely claiming he could import a motor vehicle, a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 line from Japan for Odundo.
During his court appearance before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, Kairo denied the charges. The case has now been transferred to another court where a decision on his bail and bond will be made.
In his defence, Kairo denied the allegations that he had misrepresented his ability to import the vehicle and that the complainant had been misled into paying the money.
Witnesses, including Simon Otieno Odhiambo, Albert Hesbon Odundo and police officer Wako Jarso are expected to testify in the case.
This latest arrest adds to a series of legal troubles for Kairo, who has been accused of defrauding clients in several vehicle importation deals.
These incidents have painted a picture of a businessman entangled in a web of legal challenges, with claims of taking payments without delivering the promised vehicles.
Kairo’s legal team, including prominent lawyers, has previously argued against the portrayal of him as a flight risk, asserting his cooperation with investigators.
However, the prosecution has highlighted his alleged attempts to evade justice, including an incident where he reportedly purchased a plane ticket to New York shortly before his initial arrest.
