Why Luos Now Prefer Airlifting Bodies To Kisumu
In Western Kenya, funeral traditions are evolving, with an increasing trend among the Luo community to airlift bodies from major cities to Kisumu, replacing the traditional road transport.
This practice, once reserved for the affluent, has become more accessible due to competitive airfares and convenience.
Airlifting costs between Sh20,000 and Sh45,000, depending on the airline and route, with Jambojet offering lower rates compared to Kenya Airways.
However, families must still hire hearses to transport the deceased from the airport to the final destination, adding further expenses.
The growing use of air
transport for funerals is sparking debate on social media, with some arguing that it is a practical and cost-effective solution, while others view it as a status symbol.
Funeral homes and airlines now
collaborate to offer specialized services, with Kenya Airways and other carriers providing airlifting services in partnership with funeral directors.
Despite the convenience of air transport, traditional road transport, which includes full-service packages such as vehicles for mourners and overnight stays, remains a popular and cheaper alternative. Funeral service providers like Delight Funeral Directors and Edwards Funeral Services offer inclusive packages ranging from Sh80,000 to Sh400,000, depending on the vehicle type and services provided.
This shift in funeral transport preferences reflects a broader change in cultural practices, balancing practicality with evolving social norms, as families in Western Kenya continue to navigate the costs and logistics of burying their loved ones with dignity.
