Sorry and Grief as Community Mourns 13-Year-Old Boy Killed by Father Over Milk and Bread
A post-mortem conducted at Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital revealed that Kimutai died from a combination of severe head injuries, respiratory failure, and internal organ damage.
A somber mood engulfed Kapcheplanga village in Bomet County on Tuesday as hundreds of mourners gathered to bid farewell to 13-year-old Emmanuel Kimutai, whose life was cut short in a shocking act of domestic violence.
Kimutai, a pupil at Chebugon Primary School preparing for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), was allegedly beaten to death by his father after he reportedly drank a neighbour’s milk and ate bread.
At his funeral, grief-stricken relatives, teachers, and leaders described the young boy as a disciplined, hardworking, and promising child. His mother, Winny Chelangat, eulogized her son as a role model to his siblings whose absence had left “a huge emptiness” in their lives.
“Words cannot describe the sorrow and loss that we are feeling as a family as we mourn the life that was, but also the life that might have been,” she said tearfully.
Chebugon Primary head teacher Elijah Mutai told mourners that the school had been overwhelmed by condolence messages, saying Kimutai had been “an outstanding pupil with great potential.”
Local leaders who attended the funeral condemned the killing and called for justice. Kapsoit MCA Paul Chirchir Tarimbo, who donated a cow to support the grieving family, urged the Judiciary not to release the suspect on bail.
“We want justice for the family. This boy’s death cannot go unpunished,” he said.
Emurua Dikiir MP Johanna Ngeno described the killing as a wake-up call for families to speak out against abuse.
“This innocent soul whose bright future was cruelly cut short is a reminder that silence can be deadly. No child should ever suffer at the hands of those entrusted to protect them,” Ngeno said, vowing to stand with the family.
A post-mortem conducted at Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital revealed that Kimutai died from a combination of severe head injuries, respiratory failure, and internal organ damage.
Doctors said ruptured blood vessels in the brain caused fatal haemorrhage, while trauma to his spleen and chest congestion restricted normal breathing.
The boy’s death has left the community in shock, with residents demanding justice and stronger measures to protect children from violence within their homes.
