Juja MP George Koimburi Found Unconscious in Coffee Farm After Sunday Abduction
MP Koimburi is known to be a close ally of Gachagua, and the incident comes amid heightened political tensions.
KIAMBU COUNTY – Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was found unconscious in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi area, Kiambu County, early Monday morning, approximately 18 hours after he was allegedly abducted outside a church on Sunday afternoon.
The MP was discovered lying on the ground still wearing the navy blue suit he had on when he was taken, according to witnesses who rushed him to Karen Hospital via ambulance for medical treatment.
According to MP Koimburi’s wife, Ann Koimburi, the incident occurred when two men disguised as church worshippers approached her husband outside a church in Kiambu on Sunday afternoon.
The men, dressed in plain clothes and without identifying themselves, forcibly grabbed the MP and bundled him into a waiting silver Subaru Forester.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the MP being driven away in the vehicle, which reportedly had an altered number plate – apparently to conceal the car’s true identity.
Mrs. Koimburi reported the abduction to police on Sunday, prompting an immediate investigation into the incident.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democratic Change Party (DCP), who condemned the actions as part of “systematic political persecution targeting opposition leaders.”
MP Koimburi is known to be a close ally of Gachagua, and the incident comes amid heightened political tensions.
Just a day before the abduction, police in Kakamega dispersed DCP supporters during planned rallies, and the party’s Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala had his vehicle impounded for alleged dangerous driving.
Gachagua has accused the government of deliberately targeting DCP supporters in an attempt to undermine the party’s campaign activities, though the government has yet to issue any official statement regarding these allegations.
Kenya Police have categorically denied any involvement in the MP’s abduction and have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Authorities have indicated they want to interview MP Koimburi as part of their probe once his medical condition permits.
The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, and investigators are working to identify the perpetrators and establish the circumstances that led to the MP being found in the coffee plantation.
MP Koimburi is currently receiving medical treatment at Karen Hospital, where he was taken after being found unconscious. He reportedly complained of being beaten by his abductors during the ordeal.
Police investigations continue as authorities work to piece together the events of the past 24 hours and bring those responsible to justice.
