How a Gen Z Hacker Stole Sh 1.7 Million from Tech Company and Distributed to 147 Safaricom Numbers With Ease

A young GenZ seems to have thought out of the box and managed to overdo some experienced IT guys and did the unthinkable.

identified as John Nduati, accused of hacking into tech company Web Tribe Ltd and stealing over Sh 1.7 million, was arraigned in court and charged with theft. Nduati, who falls within the Gen Z demographic, is alleged to have stolen Sh 1,795,735 on July 19, 2024.

According to court documents, after stealing the funds, Nduati distributed the stolen money to 147 Safaricom subscribers. The recipients allegedly withdrew the money, severely hindering any possibility of recovering the stolen amount.

The prosecution opposed Nduati’s release on bond, arguing that he could potentially interfere with witnesses in the case. However, the court rejected this argument, citing that Nduati had voluntarily appeared at the police station after receiving summons, demonstrating compliance with the legal process.

“The fact that the investigating officer brought the accused to court for plea taking instead of seeking a search warrant clearly indicates that the investigations are complete,” the court stated. “The accused person is hereby released on a Sh 2 million bond and is ordered to deposit his passport in court.”

The case is set to be mentioned on September 2 for further directions
