DPP Noordin Haji continues to crack his whip on corruption cases in the county government. Just after Migori and Tharaka Nithi governors got arrested over graft cases, the DPP has ordered the  arrest of Garissa Governor Ali Korane and four county officials over alleged theft of Sh235m World Bank cash.

Haji says that investigations determined that Garissa had received Sh233,506,000 grant from World Bank under the Kenyan Urban Support Program.

The finds were to be strictly used for three core projects; construction of Qorahey market, rebranding of Garissa Township CBD roads and construction of storm water drainage and pedestrian walk ways.

Haji says instead of implementing the funds as per the plan, Ali Korane and his group diverted the funds in other projects between February and September 2019.

The irregular transfer was done by Ibrahim Malow Nur, the CFO, Mohamed Ahmed Abdulahi, Hess if treasury and Ahmed Abdullahi Aden, head of accounting at the county.

Korani is accused of abdicating his duties as the county’s chief executive to ensure strict implementation of the initial plans thereby making him an accomplice by facilitating the misappropriation of the grant funds.

They will be charged with; conspiracy to an offence of economic crime, willful failure to comply with the law relating to management of public funds, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office.
