Belgium Rugby Coach Dies At Safari Sevens in Nairobi
Belgium women’s rugby sevens coach Warren Abrahams died at the Safari Sevens in Nairobi on Friday, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) announced on Sunday.
The 43-year-old Abraham, a South African, collapsed at Nyayo Stadium and was attended to by medical personal before being rushed to a city hospital.
“KRU deeply mourns the untimely death of Warren Abrahams, the coach of Belgium ladies national sevens team while on tour for Safari Sevens,” said a statement from the union.
Withheld death announcement
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Belgium rugby fraternity during this difficult time,” the statement said.
KRU said the former Wales head coach’s passion, professionalism, and dedication to the game will be fondly remembered by all.
KRU chairperson Harriet Okach said they had to withhold making the announcement until his family in South Africa was informed.
The family also requested for the announcement not to be made until they arrived in Nairobi, Okach said.
Cause of the coach’s death
Belgium withdraw from the tournament following the death of their coach. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
“Belgium Rugby is in mourning following the sudden death of Warren Abrahams, head coach of the BelSevens,” announced the Belgium Rugby Federation. The federation said all necessary measures have been taken to best support the players and staff.
“The team has already returned to Belgium and will continue to receive psychological support to help them through this ordeal,” said the federation.
The Safari Sevens is held annually in Kenya and features nations and clubs from around the world.
