Last week, reports that Felix Orinda alias DJ Evolve was struggling with a Sh7 million hospital bill sparked outrage from Kenyans who hold Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino responsible.

Through his lawyer Duncan Okatch, The MP, who is accused of shooting DJ Evolve on the neck at a Kilimani club in Nairobi, stated that the legislator has so far paid Sh5m for the hospital bills.

“Our client has up to date paid a total of Sh5 million which principally is channeled towards the treatment of the victim,” states part of the letter by Okatch and Partners Advocates.

“The court order indicated that these monies were to be paid directly to the Honourable Courts, which would then release the funds, on a monthly basis, to Nairobi Hospital where the victim is hospitalized… This essentially means that our client has no control of the funds once he has deposited the same in court. It is instructive to note that our client voluntarily, and without coercion or court orders, paid an initial sum of Ksh.600,000 and has openly undertaken to cater fully for the medical expenses of the victim until the victim fully recovers.” states the letter.

Babu Owino was arrested on Friday, January 17, 2020, for allegedly shooting the 25-year-old DJ and arraigned in court where Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi directed Babu Owino to deposit Sh10 million cash bail in four equal installments of Sh2.5 million each in the next three months.
