Mother And Daughter Identified As The Victims Who Drowned In The Likoni Ferry Tragedy

A  mother and daughter have been identified as the victims who passed on in the Likoni ferry tragedy.

The victims, Mariam Kighenda, 35, and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu perished after the vehicle they were in slid from the rear of the MV Harambee ferry just before it docked.

Videos that made rounds on social media showed the Toyota ISIS floating on the ocean as it sunk within seconds amid screams from onlookers.

It was a sad sight at the ferry as Mariam’s family were seen on Monday monitoring the rescue operations.

According to Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich the vehicle the two were in lost its braking ability and reversed into the Ocean. Attempts to throw rescue savers to the victims didn’t help as they couldn’t get to them.

Authorities have confirmed the vehicle is about 60 metres deep and Kenya Ferry Services is currently negotiating with the Kenya Navy for more oxygen. divers can only go down 30 metres with the oxygen tanks available.
