Govt Forms New Police Unit
The initial rollout will deploy 6,000 officers, with plans to expand to 19,000 officers nationwide through phased recruitment and deployment.
The government has launched the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) to bolster security, administrative support, and peace-building efforts under the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO).
Speaking at the launch of the administration police service roadmap for service delivery revitalization and NGAPU, at Jacaranda Hotel in South Coast, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the National Police Service for its crucial role in addressing key security challenges such as terrorism, cattle rustling, and border security along the Kenya-Somalia frontier.
Murkomen noted the police service has undergone significant reforms since the promulgation of the new Constitution, positioning itself to meet modern security demands.
To enhance service delivery, Murkomen revealed that the police force will receive 3,000 vehicles. He said the new NGAPU unit would focus on law enforcement, administrative support, and peace-building functions, working alongside NGAOs to ensure efficient management of security and fulfillment of duties at the grassroots level.
The NGAPU will play a critical role in providing security during public functions, resolving disputes, managing conflicts, and ensuring peace-building initiatives in volatile areas. The unit will also assist in apprehending suspects and preserving evidence during investigations.
The initial rollout will deploy 6,000 officers, with plans to expand to 19,000 officers nationwide through phased recruitment and deployment. Murkomen emphasized that this transformative step will enhance NGAOs’ ability to operate in previously ungoverned areas, improving security and law enforcement.
A key mandate of the NGAPU will be combating illicit brews, an issue that has previously hindered NGAOs due to limited security support.State rolls out operations for police unit to bolster NGAO
