Chris Obure Taken To Hospital Over COVID-19 As A New Suspect Is Charged Widening The Kilimani Murder Web
Businessman Chris Obure and his co-accused in the murder Kevin Omwenga are set to face additional charges over the firearm used in the killing.
However, the businessman was not presented in court to plead to the new charges as his lawyer said that he was taken to Riruta Hospital to take a Covid-19 test.
On Wednesday, September 9, Obure and his co-accused Robert Ouko Bodo pleaded not guilty to the killing of Kevin Omwega in Kilimani, Nairobi.
According to the charge sheet presented in court, Obure is to be charged with two criminal counts — failing to secure a firearm and ammunition.
Particulars of the offence are that on August 21, 2020, while at Senteu Plaza in Glo-jet offices and being a licenced firearm holder, Obure unlawfully allowed his firearm to be used by Robert Bodo to advance the cause of murder.
Meanwhile, his bodyguard Robert Bodo who appeared in court but did not plead to charges is facing two more counts for being in possession of a firearm without a certificate and being in possession of ammunition without a licence.
On Wednesday, Justice Mumbi Ngugi directed that Obure to be taken for testing after the defence informed the court that he had exhibited Covid-19 related symptoms.
On the new charges, Nairobi Magistrate Sinkiyian Tobiko agreed with the application and deferred the plea to Friday, September 11, when Obure will be availed in court.
Meanwhile, a third suspect in the brutal murder of Kevin Omwega was on Thursday arraigned in court in Nairobi.
The investigating officer, who is attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) urged the court to detain the suspect, a Congolese man identified as Yatha Bahati Josue, for seven days to allow police complete investigations.
The DCI officer said the suspect’s phone, a Samsung A10, was used to communicate with the murder suspects when the killing happened.
The detective said that Josue was in constant communication with Kevin Omwenga and the two men charged with his death, Chris Obure and Robert Bodo before and after the shooting.
Josue was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, and detained at the Capital Hill Police Station.
Police suspect that the killing was orchestrated after a deal went south.-(External Source)
