Volleyball Star Janet Wanja Diagnosed With Cancer
Janet Wanja, a celebrated former setter for Kenya’s women’s national volleyball team, is facing one of the toughest battles of her life.
The 40-year-old, known for her remarkable contributions to the sport, has been diagnosed with gallbladder cancer.
Her family revealed the heartbreaking news on Monday, December 9, through her brother, Kevin Kimani, a renowned footballer currently on loan at Mathare United.
Wanja’s health challenges began four months ago, and she is now undergoing treatment in Nairobi.
Her diagnosis comes at a time when she had transitioned into coaching, serving as a fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers during their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Her expertise and unwavering dedication were pivotal in shaping the team’s strategies and performance.
“Janet has inspired us all with her courage and tenacity. Now, she needs our collective support more than ever,” her family said in a heartfelt statement.
They urged fans and well-wishers to rally around Janet Wanja during this difficult time.
“Your messages of hope, words of encouragement, and expressions of love will provide her with the strength and positivity she needs,” they added.
Wanja’s illustrious career
Wanja’s illustrious volleyball career spans over a decade.
An alumnus of Mukumu Girls High School.
She began her professional journey with KCB in 2004 before joining Pipeline, where she played until her retirement in 2019.
Her achievements are nothing short of stellar,
Including five Africa Nations Championship titles, three All-Africa Games gold medals, and a World Grand Prix title.
Gallbladder cancer, her current adversary, is notoriously challenging to diagnose early due to its subtle symptoms.
This condition affects the small organ beneath the liver, complicating timely intervention.
As Wanja fights this battle, she carries with her the love and prayers of an entire nation.
