Journalist And Author Rasna Warah Has Passed On

Nairobi, Kenya – January 12, 2025 –Renowned journalist and author Rasna Warah has passed on. Warah, who passed away on January 11 at the age of 63 after battling an illness, was celebrated for her fearless commentary on societal issues, governance, and human rights.

Warah’s career was marked by her tenure as an editor at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and her prolific writing, including books on Somalia such as “War Crimes” and “Mogadishu Then and Now.” Her work was characterized by a commitment to exposing corruption, challenging the status quo, and advocating for justice and equality.

Her death was confirmed by close family friend and human rights activist Alamin Kimathi, who expressed his condolences via social media. “Very sad news of the passing on of Rasna Warah. Hello all. Rasna Warah passed away a couple of hours ago. More details to follow,” Kimathi posted, reflecting the shock and grief felt by many.

Warah’s battle with breast cancer, which she revealed in 2022, has been noted as a significant challenge in her later years. Her husband, Grey Phombeah, and their family are yet to share further details regarding her passing and funeral arrangements. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, readers, and public figures, celebrating her legacy as a champion for equity and integrity.

On platforms like X, posts have been filled with reminiscences of her impactful work and her role in mentoring younger journalists. She was remembered not just as a journalist but as a visionary who dared to dream of a better Kenya, with many expressing that her work would continue to inspire future generations.
