IG Douglas Kanja Insists He Didn’t Attend Ruto’s Rally In Nyeri
Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has dismissed as misleading allegations by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that he attended a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.
While reaffirming the IG’s unwavering commitment to constitutional impartiality in serving all Kenyans without political bias, the NPS, through Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, said, “At no point has the IG engaged in activities that could compromise the neutrality of his office”.
Nyaga clarified that the IG’s presence in Nyeri was strictly in line with his official duties, including oversight of security arrangements during the President’s development tour, a key mandate of the NPS.
“The Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) is legally tasked with protecting the President, visiting dignitaries, and other designated VIPs under the direction of the Inspector General of Police”, Nyaga added in the statement.
He outlined the IG’s various engagements since mid-March 2025 including an operational tour across Baringo, Samburu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia, and Meru Counties, focusing on, impromptu inspections of police stations, welfare, mental health, financial prudence for officers, encouraging the enhancement of ICT skills to align with the digitization of police services, reaffirming the Reform Agenda, and the success of Operation Maliza Uhalifu in the North Rift.
Earlier, the IG and the CS Interior assessed progress in Loruk (Baringo) and Kirimon (Laikipia), where they commended the officers for restoring security in bandit-prone areas.
“NPS urges the public to disregard the misleading assertions, as it remains apolitical and committed to the mandate of maintaining law and order”, NPS advised.
The rejoinder was in response to a hard-hitting statement by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that called out the police boss for addressing a political rally during the President’s development tour of Mt Kenya region.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo stated that the IG’s violated the constitution.
“Mr. Kanja’s actions are in direct conflict with the constitution, statute, and the National Police Service Standing Orders. By reducing the high office of Inspector-General to a conduit of advancing ethno-political balkanization, he has compromised its integrity and impartiality,” she said.
The lawyers are now demanding that he issue a public apology and immediately refrain from engaging in any political mobilization, rallies and discourse, or resign.
“We urge Mr. Kanja to re-evaluate his tasks and do that which is required of him by the law and the people of Kenya. In the alternative, we invite Mr. Kanja to step aside from the position of Inspector-General and allow”, LSK asserts.
