City Lawyer Shot Dead by Gunmen on Motorbike in Karen
Witnesses said the assailants pulled up beside his vehicle during a traffic jam near Galleria Mall and opened fire through the windshield.
Nairobi, Kenya, Sep 9 – Prominent Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was on Tuesday morning shot dead by unknown assailants riding a motorbike in Karen, in what police described as a targeted execution.
Mbobu, a seasoned advocate and former chair of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was driving along Magadi Road on his way to work when he was ambushed.
Witnesses said the assailants pulled up beside his vehicle during a traffic jam near Galleria Mall and opened fire through the windshield.
Police reports indicate the lawyer was shot at least three times in the chin, dying instantly as his body slumped onto the driver’s seat. His attackers sped off on their motorbike, leaving commuters in panic and traffic in gridlock.
“He had just slowed down in traffic when two men on a motorbike stopped beside him, shattered the windscreen, and fired at close range before escaping,” a police officer at the scene told reporters.
Mbobu, who also lectured law at Multimedia University, was widely respected in legal and academic circles. His sudden killing has rattled colleagues in the legal fraternity and sparked calls for urgent investigations.
The brazen daylight shooting adds to growing concerns over insecurity in the capital, where motorcycle-riding gunmen have been linked to a surge in assassinations and violent robberies.
