KRA Introduces ID Number Login Option on iTax
Until now, taxpayers were only able to access the iTax portal using their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
NAIROBI, Kenya — In a major shift aimed at easing access to digital tax services, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has rolled out a new feature allowing individual taxpayers to log into the iTax platform using their National ID numbers.
The announcement, made on Monday, marks a pivotal move by the tax authority in its continued effort to simplify tax processes, reduce user frustrations, and encourage voluntary compliance.
Until now, taxpayers were only able to access the iTax portal using their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
While the PIN-based login will still be available, KRA says the decision to offer an ID number login stems from persistent feedback from users who find ID numbers easier to recall and more integrated into daily life.
“This is part of our broader strategy to build a tax system that is not only digital-first but also people-centered,” the Authority said in its statement.
“The goal is to remove any barriers that might discourage taxpayers from engaging with our services.”
The iTax platform is the government’s primary digital tool for filing returns, making payments, applying for compliance certificates, and performing other tax-related services.
KRA hopes that easing access will boost engagement and expand the tax base through higher rates of voluntary compliance.
This latest reform is one of several the KRA has undertaken in recent months as it modernises its operations and adopts a more customer-centric approach.
The Authority has promised to keep listening to taxpayers and introduce further improvements based on public input.
Taxpayers can now use either their PIN or ID number to access their accounts on the iTax portal, effective immediately.
