Ministry of Foreign Affairs Decries Organized Cyber Attacks By ‘A Few Social Media Influencers’ To Delegitimize The Government
The ministry noted that these activities include AI-generated deepfakes, fabricated narratives and misinformation campaigns, with coordinated auto-generated emails being sent to foreign capitals.
Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Ministry has raised alarm over a rise in cyber activities aimed at undermining the government’s credibility.
In a statement on Thursday, January 16, the ministry said these activities, initially sparked by protests from “Gen Zs,” have evolved into organised cyber attacks led by social media influencers.
“These attacks are designed to delegitimize government initiatives, discourage high-level visits and harm Kenya’s international standing,” the ministry stated.
The ministry noted that these activities include AI-generated deepfakes, fabricated narratives and misinformation campaigns, with coordinated auto-generated emails being sent to foreign capitals.
“These activities, initially sparked by genuine protests by “Gen Z” have evolved into organized cyber-attacks by a few social media influencers and seek to delegitimize government initiatives, discourage high-level visits, de-campaign Kenya’s candidates for international and regional positions, while sending intimidatory messages to members of the international community,” the statement read.
“The majority of these attacks are aimed at influencing foreign perception and creating instability,” the ministry added.
At the same time, the ministry assured international partners that steps are underway to address the issue, including the development of a Technology Responsibility Charter aimed at promoting accountability and ethical practices in the digital space.
“We are committed to creating a safe digital environment and will hold those responsible accountable.”
Other measures include the establishment of a Broad-Based Government, withdrawal of the contested Finance Bill 2024, and the creation of a more inclusive bill.
Additionally, the government is expanding civic space through a Multistakeholder Forum and ensuring the protection of individual rights and safety.
The ministry’s statement comes, after the Interior counterpart announced plans to establish a centralized hub for reporting cyber threats.
Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, speaking after meeting with telecommunications operators and social media organisations, noted the need for stronger collaboration to tackle misuse in the digital space.
“We must define the responsibilities of stakeholders, including telcos and content platforms, for a coordinated approach,” Omollo said.
He explained the hub would protect users from cyber threats, as part of efforts to ensure a secure and responsible digital environment.
