A 16-year-old girl committed suicide after she was caught by her brother making love with a 19- year-old teenager at Kolongoni village in Chonyi Sub County, Kilifi County on Sunday evening.
The class eight pupil and who was expected to sit for her KCPE exam this year, was busted by her brother Joseph Ringa at her lover’s house and fled into the bush fearing the brother would beat her up.
Her lifeless body was later found hanging from a mango tree with a rope round her neck on Monday.
Police from Kijipwa police station were alerted about the incident and removed the body to Kilifi Level 5 hospital mortuary.
Police sources also confirmed to the press that the brother Joseph Ringa has been arrested for questioning over the incident.
Chonyi Deputy County Commissioner Samuel Karisa who confirmed the incident said since the government closed schools to combat COVID-19, the children have been idling in their homes and urged parents to engage them in farming activities as the long rains season has sets in.
He said it is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the village and cautioned close relatives of the deceased against speculating over the cause of death and wait for police investigations.
According to a close relative, the body was removed from the mortuary yesterday for burial at their Kolongoni home by a few close relatives in conformity with directives by the government.
