1000 Ways To Die In Kenya: Govt Recalls 7 Peanut Butter Brands Over Cancer-Linked Aflatoxin
The government via the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a product recall on seven peanut butter brands over high aflatoxin levels.
Recalled are
1. True nuts
2. Fressy
3. Supa meal
4. Nuteez
5. Sue’s Naturals
6. Zesta
7. Nutty by nature
Via a statement release on social media on November 4th KEBS instructed the 7 companies to stop manafucture of the substandard products immediately and put in place corrective actions in their processes to ensure that their products comply with the quality standards.
This is not the first time batches of peanut butter that had exceeded by more than double the set aflatoxin standard have been recalled, earlier in January, Nuteez had been recalled for the same a move which was later cancelled in April in unclear circumstances.
Aflatoxin is a natural product and is poisonous. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), large doses of aflatoxins lead to acute poisoning (aflatoxicosis) that can be life-threatening, usually through damage to the liver.
“Aflatoxin is a natural product and is poisonous. We could consume it in all kinds of cereals and so the level in our country has to be different based on what we consume… It may seem little but it can be lethal,” Government Chemist official John Kibuthi had said in January.
