DCI And KRA Intensifies Hunt On 444 High End Cars Illegally Registered Or Stolen Targets Untouchables
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified an ongoing crackdown on top-of-the-range cars that they say are either stolen or have not been paid duty for. The authorities have so far impounded 18 such vehicles on a crackdown that will target 444 high end cars.
The DCI On July 31st this year, through the officer in charge of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), issued a 12 page memo to all police stations in the country to immediately impound any of the targeted cars.
“A list of the attached vehicles are circulated in order to have them traced and detailed. The motor vehicles are suspected to have been fraudulently registered and they’re therefore unaccustomed since taxes in their regard have not been paid,” Peter Kiboro, the DCI KRA unit said.
KRA has recently intensified the crackdown on all tax evaders including rich tycoons, politicians and firms that were initially considered untouchable.
Huge names in the political games have been mentioned and their cars impounded, among the first 18, Raila Odinga’s Range Rover registration KCS 002D was seized, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa’s Range Rover flagged by the taxman in 2016 is also being sought. A Range Rover owned by Steve Mbogo that was found to be using registration details KCL 830A that are also shared by a Probox is also under investigations.

Out of the 444 cars that the DCI and taxman are targeting, 64 are Range Rovers, 94 Mercedes Benz, 1 porsche and the rest are Toyotas, Nissans, volkswagens, subarus and two volvos.
The vehicles are said to be entering the country in transit to neighbouring countries but end up in Nairobi and other towns thereby denying the taxman millions in unpaid duty.
