Opposition Alliance Vows to Prosecute President Ruto Over Corruption, Killings

The coalition of opposition leaders has pledged to pursue criminal charges against President William Ruto for alleged corruption, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic discrimination if they capture power in the 2027 elections.

The warning came during a fiery rally in Bungoma town, where an alliance including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, ex-Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi and Fred Matiang’i, and several other prominent politicians outlined their plans for accountability.

“Ruto is the most corrupt president in the world and should face judges when we take over,” declared Muturi, who previously served as Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary under the current administration. The former justice minister accused Ruto of presiding over a regime marked by violence, claiming innocent youth continue to disappear or die under suspicious circumstances.

The opposition leaders also criticized what they characterized as discriminatory government appointments, alleging the presidency has concentrated top state positions within a single ethnic group in violation of constitutional principles of fairness and national unity.

DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa framed the alliance as a rescue mission for the country. “Our main goal is to free the country from these barbaric acts. Let us unite and send Ruto home,” he told the gathered crowd.

Gachagua, who was impeached as deputy president earlier in Ruto’s term, announced the coalition would continue holding public forums nationwide to mobilize support and gather citizen concerns. He indicated that selecting a presidential candidate would follow extensive national consultations.

“We are currently engaging with Kenyans across the country. At the right time, we will agree on one flag bearer,” Gachagua stated.

In a notable moment, the former deputy president apologized to residents of Bungoma and the Mt. Kenya region, expressing regret for supporting Ruto in the previous election.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Matiang’i addressed government accusations that opposition figures are financing recent demonstrations, challenging authorities to make arrests if they have evidence rather than making allegations at political rallies.

The Bungoma gathering represents part of a broader opposition mobilization effort aimed at consolidating anti-government sentiment across Kenya’s diverse regions ahead of the next presidential contest.
