Career Highlights

Before attending law school, Cheney spent five years working for the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.

Following this, she joined the consulting firm Armitage Associates. After graduating from law school, Cheney practiced law at the firm White & Case.

She also worked as an international law attorney and consultant at the International Finance Corporation.

Additionally, Cheney served as a USAID officer in US embassies located in Budapest, Hungary, and Warsaw, Poland.

US State Department (2002-2007)

In 2002, Cheney became Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, where she led the Middle East Partnership Initiative.

In 2003, she left to work on the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign.

Cheney returned to the State Department in early 2005 as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives.

She oversaw initiatives like the Fund of the Future and Foundation of the Future, aimed at promoting democracy and press freedom.

After State Department

Race for US Senate

In the summer of 2013, Cheney launched her campaign for the US Senate as a Republican from Wyoming.

However, her campaign faced challenges due to her strong stance on foreign policy and a public disagreement with her sister over same-sex marriage, as her sister is gay.

Also, Cheney struggled to gain the same level of popularity as the incumbent, Mike Enzi. As a result, she withdrew from the race in early 2014.
