Before attending law school, Cheney spent five years working for the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.

Following this, she joined the consulting firm Armitage Associates. After graduating from law school, Cheney practiced law at the firm White & Case.

She also worked as an international law attorney and consultant at the International Finance Corporation.

Additionally, Cheney served as a USAID officer in US embassies located in Budapest, Hungary, and Warsaw, Poland.

US State Department (2002-2007)
