Trattoria, one of Nairobi’s most beloved culinary landmarks, has begun relocating from its longstanding home on Wabera Street after 44 years of operation.

The Italian restaurant, a fixture in Nairobi’s dining scene since 1981, is moving from Town House to new premises at 20th Century House along Kaunda Street, according to notices posted at the establishment.

“We are currently having some relocation process, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during this transition. Thank you for your understanding and trusting us to give you the best of our service,” read a statement from Trattoria Limited to its customers.

Owned by Italian national Gaetano Ruffo, who first visited Kenya as a tourist in 1975 before settling permanently in 1977, Trattoria opened its doors in 1981. Initially specializing in Italian cuisine paired with select wines, the restaurant later expanded its menu offerings.

The relocation comes after years of legal disputes with the restaurant’s landlord, Joanina Wanjiku Maina.

Court records show the conflict began in 2013, with the landlord attempting to evict Trattoria in 2015 on claims that the restaurant was occupying more space than it was paying for—specifically 7,303 square feet while only paying for 5,801 square feet.

Additional complaints included allegations that Ruffo had blocked exit passages and fire assembly points with gas cylinders and water tanks, and that the restaurant had expanded its kitchen over a sewer line, potentially creating health hazards.

Despite these challenges, the court ruled in Ruffo’s favor, allowing him to renew his lease for an additional decade. That extended lease appears to be expiring this year, likely precipitating the move.

The restaurant’s relocation marks the end of an era for the Wabera Street location, though loyal patrons will now have the opportunity to continue enjoying their favorite dishes at the new Kaunda Street premises.
