Mexico’s security forces on Sunday killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the nation’s most powerful cartel leader, after he was wounded during an attempted arrest in Jalisco state and died while being transferred to Mexico City. His killing marks the highest-profile blow against cartels in a decade and sparked a wave of arson and road blockades across large parts of the country.
Nemesio Ruben Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho, had networks in at least 23 Mexican states and in major US cities, and an organised crime group in 5 continents. Reports estimate his fortune between $500M and $1B.
