Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee Is Dead
Cyprian Orina-Nyamwamu, the spokesperson for Kenya Bora Tuitakayo (KBT), announced that he passed away in the US Saturday morning.
He will go down in history as one of Kenya’s most distinguished legal practitioners, whose litigation prowess made a lasting impact during the 2017 Presidential petition.
Although he had retired from active practice a few years ago, last year he gave a keynote address at the Law Society of Kenya Annual Conference 2024 in August in Diani, Kwale, where he received a standing ovation.
He was the Chair of the Asian African Heritage Trust, which has played a very significant role in advancing Kenya’s position and progress in diplomacy, peace, friendship and education worldwide.
As condolences pour in, the legal fraternity remembered him as a fierce advocate for human rights and good governance, a Pan-Africanist, a scholar, and a writer.
The President of the Law Society of Kenya, Faith Odhiambo, paid a glowing tribute to him for his exemplary duty to service and unwavering dedication to justice.
“A man of irrefutable poise and honourable character, whose life exemplified duty to service and dedication to Justice. Our hearts sink today, for we have lost one of the greatest to have ever done it”, she mourned him.
She added, “As we honour this bastion of constitutionalism, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and every person whose life he touched. May Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee rest in eternal peace”.
“Pheroze was a paragon of virtue, a brilliant legal mind, public intellectual and a stalwart of the legal and human rights movement in Kenya, including serving as the NCEC Convener &Spokesperson. He was a gentle giant and a defender of democracy, justice, and liberation”, said Orina.
“He leaves behind a rich legacy that we must emulate. I fondly remember his powerful speech in Atlanta, Georgia where he stood firmly with the GenZs in their revolution,” said former IEBC commissioner Roselyne Akombe
Rarieda MP Otieno Amollo also conveyed his condolences, ” Quite Saddened To Learn That My Senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee Has Passed-On! A Quintessential Advocate Who Presented The Best In Court Advocacy. Rest In Power Senior!”.
Nowrojee started practicing law in 1965. Some of his milestones include a Master of Laws from Yale University, Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar; an Inductee of the Law Society of Kenya Roll of Honour; Jurist of the Year of the International Community of Jurists; National Cohesion and Integration Commission; Vice Chair, Ufungamano People’s Commission on Constitutional Reforms; and Member, Committee on Public Violence, Kenya National Human Rights Commission.
