Juja MP George Koimburi Abducted From Church Service as Wife Sustains Injuries
“They have been trailing him since last week when he was giving out bursaries,” Senator Thang’wa disclosed, adding that surveillance of the MP had been ongoing for days.
Lawmaker seized in broad daylight during Sunday service just days after escaping previous kidnapping attempt
Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was forcibly taken by unknown assailants during a church service on Sunday afternoon, with his wife suffering injuries as she attempted to prevent the abduction.
The dramatic incident unfolded at Full Gospel Church in Mugutha, Kiambu County, where congregants watched in shock as the lawmaker was bundled into a Subaru vehicle during the ongoing service. This marks the second kidnapping attempt against Koimburi within 48 hours.
Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, a close ally of the MP, confirmed the abduction to local media, revealing that Koimburi’s wife was hurt while trying to physically intervene during the struggle. The extent of her injuries remains unclear.
“They have been trailing him since last week when he was giving out bursaries,” Senator Thang’wa disclosed, adding that surveillance of the MP had been ongoing for days.
The Sunday abduction comes after Koimburi narrowly escaped a similar attempt on Friday while distributing bursaries at Gachororo Primary School.
Acting on a tip-off about potential arrest, the MP abandoned his official vehicle and driver, fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. His driver was subsequently questioned at DCI headquarters before being released.
Koimburi had been in hiding since Friday’s escape, with his whereabouts unknown until he surfaced at the Kiambu church service.
The decision to attend the public worship service proved fateful, as his pursuers apparently tracked him to the location.
This pattern of evasion is not new for the controversial MP.
In February, Koimburi staged a similar motorcycle escape outside Kiambu Law Courts while addressing media alongside his legal team.
He faces six criminal charges, including allegations of forging academic certificates dating back nearly three decades.
The motives behind the current pursuit remain murky, with Koimburi’s allies insisting he received no formal summons or advance warning before the incidents began.
The involvement of multiple agencies and the persistence of the pursuit suggests serious underlying issues beyond the pending court cases.
The brazen nature of Sunday’s abduction carried out in full view of a congregation during active worship—has raised serious questions about the rule of law and due process.
The use of force against both the MP and his wife, who was injured while trying to protect her husband, adds another disturbing dimension to the case.
As of Sunday evening, Koimburi’s current whereabouts remain unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
