Gachagua, Woman Face Eviction Over Unpaid Sh25 Million Nairobi Apartment

Gachagua allegedly used his position as deputy president to compel a contractor to hand over valuable property without payment

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his associate Julia Muthoni Mwangi are facing eviction from a luxury Nairobi apartment they allegedly occupy without paying a single shilling of the agreed Sh25 million purchase price.

In a demand letter dated September 30, 2025, lawyers representing Royal Importers and Exporters Limited accuse the pair of illegally occupying Unit 02 on the first floor of Block D at Skyrock Apartments after promising full payment before taking possession.

Adrian Kamotho Njenga & Company Advocates claim Gachagua and Mwangi simply moved into the property without fulfilling the critical payment condition.

“Despite the blatant failure to settle the price, you have in utter impunity remained in unlawful occupation of our client’s premises,” the letter reads, accusing them of “taking our client for a ride.”

The scandal has attracted attention from State House insiders. Sam Terriz, a known presidential ally, posted on X: “When he was Deputy President, Riggy G forced a contractor to give a house to his longtime side chick, promising to pay for it. However, he has never paid a single shilling, yet the side chick went ahead and moved in.”

The characterization of Mwangi as a “longtime side chick” suggests the apartment may have been intended as a personal gift that Gachagua expected to secure through political influence rather than legitimate purchase—a troubling abuse of power if true.

Dr. Adrian Kamotho, who signed the letter, demands immediate vacant possession and unconditional admission of liability.

More ominously, the lawyers warn that failure to comply will result in “auction of all items unlawfully placed in our client’s premises”—meaning Gachagua and Mwangi could have their personal belongings auctioned to satisfy the debt.

The case exemplifies a disturbing pattern among Kenya’s political elite: wielding power to extract personal benefits with no intention of honoring legal obligations.

That Gachagua allegedly used his position as deputy president to compel a contractor to hand over valuable property without payment is precisely the conduct that erodes public trust.

The property owner reportedly waited patiently, expecting Gachagua would “honor your obligations and respect the law governing property rights,” only to find themselves forced into legal action against a man who until recently held the nation’s second-highest office.

For Gachagua, already disgraced by impeachment, the prospect of being physically evicted and having his possessions auctioned represents another spectacular fall from grace.

The property owner’s lawyers have made clear they will not be intimidated by his former status: the law applies equally to all—even former deputy presidents who allegedly promised to pay but never did.
