The tragic death of 47-year-old Lucy Wambui has raised serious concerns over the safety and regulation of cosmetic surgeries in Kenya. A postmortem examination by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that Wambui underwent a “360-degree liposuction” and Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) at Omnicare Medical on October 16, 2024.

Complications began soon after, with symptoms of chest pain, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain. Despite these issues, she was discharged from the clinic on October 22, after a diagnosis of pneumonia and parapneumonic effusion.

Upon worsening, Wambui was admitted to Nairobi Hospital, where medical assessments revealed severe sepsis, a distended abdomen, and bruising across her body. An emergency laparotomy on October 23 exposed multiple intestinal perforations and the presence of fecal matter in her abdominal cavity, indicating a severe infection. Despite extensive interventions, her condition deteriorated, and she succumbed to severe sepsis and peritonitis on October 26.

The autopsy highlighted extensive internal trauma, including lung edema, abdominal fat necrosis, and widespread infection, with additional findings of liver degeneration and an enlarged heart—signs of systemic stress due to infection. The report noted that the surgical wounds from her initial procedure were septic and leaking fluid.
