Prof Bethwell Ogot Dies At 95

Professor Bethwell Ogot, a renowned Kenyan scholar, has passed away at the age of 95.
According to reports, Prof. Ogot passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in Kisumu.
He was a distinguished Kenyan historian and scholar, renowned for his pioneering contributions to the study of African history, particularly the history of East Africa.
Academic excellence
Born on August 3, 1929, in Gem, Siaya County, Kenya, he pursued his education at Makerere University, the University of St. Andrews, and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
He is a former chancellor of Moi University when it was established as Kenya’s second university.
Prof Ogot’s first published book was in 1964— East Africa: Past and Present. This was an edited collection of essays. He went on to publish many others as well as articles in local and international journals.
Prof. Ogot also held key academic and governmental roles, including serving as a commissioner for UNESCO and as the President of the International Scientific Committee for the preparation of UNESCO’s General History of Africa.
In his retirement, Prof Ogot moved to his rural home in Yala, Siaya County.
However, he never slowed down on writing and giving his opinions on matters of national importance. Until his death, he held the title of professor emeritus at Maseno University.
He will be greatly remembered as he leaves behind a legacy of scholarly excellence and a deeper understanding of African history.
