Ferdinand Omanyala Omurwa, born on January 2, 1996, is a Kenyan sprinter who competes in the 60 meters, 100 meters, and 200 meters.
In 2022, he won his first international championships by securing victories in the 100 meters at the Commonwealth Games and the African Championships in Athletics.
Omanyala holds the African record and ranks as the ninth-fastest man of all time in the 100 meters, clocking 9.77 seconds on September 18, 2021, in Nairobi. He also holds the Kenyan national record in the 60 meters.
Born in Hamisi, Omanyala is the third son of Dishon and Adelaide Omurwa. The family soon settled in Tongaren.

In 2015, Ferdinand Omanyala started his athletics career while studying chemistry at the University of Nairobi. A friend noticed his speed during rugby and suggested he try track.
Weeks later, he ran 10.4 seconds in his first race in Kakamega. That year, he won the national Olympic trials in the 100 meters with a time of 10.37 seconds but didn’t meet the Olympic qualifying standard of 10.16 seconds.
In 2017, Omanyala was suspended for 14 months after testing positive for the banned substance betamethasone, used to treat a back injury.
He won the national 100 meters title in 2019. On March 30, 2021, he set a national record of 10.01 seconds in Lagos, Nigeria.
At the Tokyo Olympics in August, he set a new national record of 10.00 seconds in the semi-finals, finishing just behind silver and bronze medalists.
Later that month, he ran 9.86 seconds in Austria, becoming the first Kenyan to break the 10-second barrier.
In September, he set a new African record of 9.77 seconds at the Absa Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi.
Omanyala became the African 100 meters champion in June 2022.
In August, he won Kenya’s first 100 meters gold medal in 60 years at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Omanyala must perform well to advance to the semifinal and then the final. The heats will be held at 12:55 p.m. at the Stade de France.
