Drama continues to unfold in the death of popular Ohangla figure Sheila Akeyo Odoyo, alias Wagesha, who was gruesomely murdered by a man believed to be his husband, Jackson Bambo, alias JB, and her body found in a house in Athi River.
In a whole new twist to the complex murder, a police officer, Sergeant Samwel Odoyo Jalang’o, now claims he is the lawful husband of the slain Ohangla queen, adding that they had lived for over 13 years and had kids together whom he says they’ve been raising together despite having separated in 2017.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Odoyo revealed that the two had been in touch as late as two days before her murder and that they were in talks to reunite in what now complicates the probe over a possible love triangle. He said that Wegesha had confided in him about her plans to leave JB to restart their failed marriage.
“We had a conversation in which we discussed how we were going to meet. I wanted to go and meet her in Nairobi, but she requested I let her travel to Kisumu, where I work,” Odoyo recounted.
“She had hinted to me that she was already looking for a house so that she could terminate her relationship with that man in order to reunite with me. Her proposal left me in high hopes that our marriage was going to restart,” he added.
Plans to reunite
Expressing his shock at the news of Sheila’s death, Odoyo said their plans to reunite were already advanced and that they had planned to meet in Kisumu.
“It was shocking news because Sheila was coming to meet me in Kisumu to plan how to rejoin my family. I expected to meet her alive, but let us leave the matter to God because he has a reason for everything,” he said.
The policeman says he is entitled to bury Sheila in line with Luo culture. “My in-laws are very cooperative in this matter because they recognise me as their son-in-law. I am the one who paid dowry, which is a sign of formalizing a marriage,” he said.
Sheila will be buried on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at her husband’s (Samwel Odoyo ) home in Kanyada, Homa-Bay County, Homa Bay Town Sub County, Kanyach Kachar Location, Soko Village Nyalkinyi School. She has been constructed a new home as per the Luo culture.
Sheila’s brother, Peter Obugi, is also cited as acknowledging Odoyo as the legitimate husband, having formalised their marriage with a paying dowry and two cows.
“In our family, I was among those who received the bride price from Odoyo.” Even though she was my sister, I played a parental role. As a family, the only person we recognise as Sheila’s husband is Odoyo, and that is why we have allowed him to bury her,” said Obugi.
He clarified that in their culture, the woman’s family recognizes a man who has paid a dowry as the legitimate husband.
Meanwhile, in a bid to set the record straight, Odoyo’s relatives maintain that Sheila was not married to Jackson. They claim the businessman was her lover.
The murder suspect is on the run.
Weeks after his murder, the police are still investigating the murder, with the key suspect still on the run.
On May 11, detectives recovered a car allegedly belonging to the estranged husband.
The police discovered the abandoned vehicle in the Kencom area within the Nairobi CBD.

Despite this, he has not yet contacted the authorities regarding the matter.
